The Last Unicorn at the Renaissance Faire

May 30, 2017 in Cosplay

Hello again! Second blog posts in a while, and what an exciting one! This was actually my first time at the Renaissance Faire and what a great time I had! But before I get into my actual Ren Faire experience I want to talk about my outfit, and a little bit on the process I took to make it.

Since, it was my first Renaissance Faire I knew I had to dress up! But I was unsure at first about what I should dress up as/wear. I was at first going to try and use costumes I already had, however I realized quickly that I didn't have anything that was "Ren Faire" appropriate. So, the quest for making something began. Before I began figuring out how to make my outfit, I had to figure out what I wanted to dress up as. Originally, I was planning on making an outfit like Guinevere from the TV show Merlin. I was really inspired by her when I watched the show and really wanted to make her dress, but then I went shopping for fabric (and I was determined to make this a "cheaper" build) I found this fabric and immediately fell in love. Once I saw this fabric I knew I had to make a dress inspired by The Last Unicorn. The only downside is that the fabric, while unbelievable affordable ($3 yd, it was considered damaged/faded), there was only 5yds of it. But as Tim Gunn says, "make it work!" So I did.

To make a pattern for the bodice of the dress I used a dress I already owned that had a similar build (no stretch, and lining) to the dress I wanted to make. Using the dress I created a basic bodice pattern and then added a bit to make it seem more fantasy oriented. Once that was done I used the pattern to create an inner lining layer that would have plastic boning channels and my outer layer with my pretty iridescent fabric. And this is where I made my first hiccup. While the lining layer came out fine with the boning, if I did this again I think I would have done the boning channels on a more heavy duty canvas type fabric rather than the actual lining layer, and I when I cut my outer layer I did not cut it "big" enough. LESSON TIME! When working with a more delicate/fray prone fabric like this you should cut the pieces a little bigger than your lining fabric, which I did, but not big enough...because of this I had some issues with some of the seams pulling and being able to see a bit of  fraying. To prevent further stress on the seams I actually put on some Fray-Away.  Learning experiences! Take your mistakes as learning experiences!

After finishing the bodice, then it was time to work on the skirt. This is where the lack of material became an issue. My original plan was to make a full circle skirt in two pieces, but after cutting the front piece I quickly realized I wouldn't have enough fabric left to make the back piece...that's when the voice of Tim Gunn appeared again "Make it work!" After the voice of perseverance/Tim Gunn I decided to make the back piece a half circle skirt with a small train. While the skirt shape looked crazy when sewn together, it actually looked pretty good when sewn onto the bodice, so yay!

After attaching the bodice and skirt (and the sleeves which were actually were much easier to do then I expected, I even got to use some of the fancy stitches on my new sewing machine!), it was time to add the appliqués. So, one of my one qualms with The Last Unicorn/Amalthea was that when she is transformed into a human her dress was not glamorous enough! When I imagine a unicorn personified, I like to think about them in a beautiful gown that is dripping with fantasy elements but sadly Amalthea dress did not have this. So, to make it more fantasy like and "Ren Faire" like, I decided to sew appliqués from some fabric I had bought for my Sorceress Kiki cosplay onto it. Hand sewing all the appliqués took quite a while but I love how much it dressed up the dress! The faux pearl trim on the sleeves also really helped with dressing up the whole look! After my dress and horn/flower crown were complete I sat down and figured out how much I spent in total on the dress. If I include fabric, lining, boning, zipper, thread, and faux pearl trim I spent about $30 in total on the dress. Which is pretty goddamn amazing to me! I was so happy that I was able to make this dress on a budget and learn A LOT while making it. Every time I sew or make something I like to take it as a learning experience, because while some people are able to do something right off the bat some of us need practice to get it right, and this is just part of my journey.

Well, after finishing the dress it was time to actually go to the Ren Faire! Oh boy, I didn't realize how popular it was! This my first time at the Ren Faire and my friends were so nice and let me take everything in. Another amazing part was that the weekend we decided to go, it was actually the cosplayer weekend! So, as expected I ran into a few cosplayers including Van_Kelsing, who was so incredibly sweet! After cosplay shenanigans we of course, had turkey legs and drinks, but we also did Knife Throwing! Which was amazing because I was the only one in our group to actually hit the target and have my knife stick! I will definitely be posting my reaction on my Instagram (so make sure to look out for it!). The only sad part is that we missed the jousting but we will definitely see it next year! I am so excited that I am already planning my outfit! Check in on my Instagram to see what I have planned soon! Well, overall the Ren Faire was an amazing experience and I can't wait to go again! Until then, TTFN ta ta for now.

Dress: Vintage (80's does 50's), Sandals: DSW, Hat: Target

Hi guys! It has been forever! I have been so busy with life, that I let my blog fall to the wayside, but no more! I hope to now update my blog more regularly with outfit photos, cosplay photos, and potentially cosplay explainers (aka faux tutorials).

I'm so excited to be back to blogging and can't wait to really dive back into the blogging sphere. For the next month or so, expect to see small changes on the blog (as I am still deciding on the final design) and traveling back in time. You may ask, "How are you going back in time?" Well, simply put I will be posting a back log of posts such as Wondercon, Renaissance Faire,Dapper Day outfits, etc. So expect to see a lot of posts coming your way!

But back to this post...I have recently been feeling nostalgic and been wearing a lot of my vintage outfits more casually. This picnic dress, as I like to call it, was worn to hang out with some friends on a Saturday and just chill. I love weekends like that and feel like I need a few more like that.

Well, as I said I'm excited to be back to blogging and hope to see y'all come back here soon! TTFN, ta ta for now.

Vintage Affair

December 12, 2016 in Fashion

Dress: Vintage, Belt: Pin-Up Girl Clothing, Shoes: Mix No.6 (DSW), Purse: Kate Spade, Earrings: Vintage

My love affair with vintage continues. When my friend told me about a vintage fair in LA, of course I had to go! And  while the outside of the building  and the description of free mimosas and snacks looked super promising, it was a bit disappointing. It was slightly disappointing because of the size of the venue, and the prices some vendors were selling their goods at. But, even with these disappointing factors, I walked away with two beautiful vintage dresses (for a deal) and had a wonderful time sipping mimosas and catching up with my cousin. I truly feel that how you decide to handle a situation will determine whether you have a good time or not, and so I always try to walk-in with a positive attitude.

Quick side note on my dress. It is a true vintage dress I got on Etsy for about $40 (with shipping) and took to my tailor to get fitted. My tailor works absolute magic! The bottom half of the dress was originally huge on me and she made it nice and form-fitting! A quick reminder for my fellow vintage fashionistas: true vintage wiggle dresses has little to no stretch, so when getting it tailored don't get it too tight! Don't want to pop those seams!

I'm sure I will have a picture of my haul up soon, so make sure to check my Instagram! Sorry for the short post, but it was re

Fall Dapper Day- Keepin' It Classy

November 28, 2016 in Fashion

Dress: Vintage, Belt: Vintage, Hat: Vintage, Purse: Vintage, Shoes: Urban Outfitters, Petticoat: Malcomodes So, finally posting about ACTUAL Fall Dapper Day! And my second Dapper Day was just as fun, if not more fun, than my first Dapper Day because I now knew what to expect. My friend and I knew what we wanted to do that day: take beautiful pictures and run around California Adventure! Last Dapper Day, I barely got to go to California Adventure but this time, I was able to full embrace it AND finally go to Cars Land! Before this I never wanted to wait in land, so I would skip it, but my friend insisted we get it as our first Fast Pass. And I loved it! While I don't like the Cars movies, and had to hold by victory rolls in place (vintage aesthetic struggle) I had such a blast when we were zooming around the track! I forgot how fun California Adventure is! I really hope to visit it again soon (hint hint *wink wink*).

Overall, the day was full of running into other beautifully dressed people, eating delicious food (including getting ice cream even though it was quite cold at night), and just enjoying the Disneyland way of life. The only sad part, was that the day got dark so early! While it was beautiful to watch the skyline, and watch the parade, I always like to stretch out my "day" as long as possible when at Disneyland. I love Disneyland and I love dressing up in vintage dresses so Dapper Day is a dream come true for me.

Quick side note, my dress is vintage and (I think) looks pretty fab, but can you believe I got it on Ebay for only $31!? I love shopping for vintage online because as long as you know your measurements and don't mind asking the seller some questions, you can get some seriously amazing deals. I actually have my Spring Dapper Day dress picked out and found it on Ebay! Don't knock it until you try it!

Keep checking into my blog and Instagram  (ID: dressesandcapes) if you want to see more of my vintage style! Until next time, TTFN. Ta ta for now.

Fall Dapper Day Expo

November 16, 2016 in Fashion

Dress: Vintage (from Elsewhere Vintage), Shoes: Steve Madden, Purse: Vintage (from Elsewhere Vintage), Earrings: Vintage, Flower Hair Piece: DIY

One of the (many) things I love about Dapper Day Expo is that it gives me an excuse to dress up, straighten my hair, practice my pin-up hairdo's, and spend time with some of the swankiest people I have ever seen.

This was my second Dapper Day Expo and I do enjoy it. It gives me a few hours of walking around in some beautiful vintage clothes, mingle with vintage vendors, and maybe purchase a vintage item or two (including the earrings I'm wearing).

After wandering the Disney Hotel ball room my friend and I decided to have lunch in Downtown Disney, and I got to finally eat at the rain forest cafe! Funny story, the one and only time I was grounded it was the night of a friend's birthday party where we were all to suppose to go to the Rainforest Cafe. And because I was grounded, I never got to go, and for some reason in all my years I never went to Rainforest Cafe after that incident. But now I have finally gone and gotta say...it was ok. It was very pretty and decorated creatively, but the food was ok and kinda expensive. Anywhose...

After Dapper Day Expo comes actual Dapper Day! So excited for Dapper Day and my Dapper Day outfit. Post to come soon! Tell me about your vintage finds, like what was your best random vintage find? Until then, TTFN, ta ta for now.

First post in a long time, and what a post it is! I finally got to do what I have always wanted and cosplay Kiki, one of my favorite characters of all time (and favorite Studio Ghibli character).

Before I get into how I made the cosplay and why I chose to do my own twist on Kiki, I want to talk about what a big deal it was for me to choose Kiki as a cosplay. Yes, Kiki is one of my favorite characters but she is also very light-skinned and I...definitely am not. With all the hate you see online towards dark skinned cosplayers who cosplay light-skinned characters, I was nervous about the reaction I would get. But Oh! I was so pleasantly surprised. The people I met at LA Comic Con, and others online have been so positive! I got so many compliments on my cosplay, and people enjoyed by interpretation of Kiki! The cosplay community is full of so much love and support. I love it so.

OK, onto my actual cosplay. As you know, I always like to put a spin on my cosplay, so of course, I had to put a spin on my favorite character Kiki. When I was breaking it down, I knew that Kiki had to be a Mage or Sorceress of some type (had to keep to her character's roots), but I also wanted her to still be cute. So I combined several elements of what a typical mage/sorceress is to create my version. I also knew that I wanted Kiki to have a huge staff. But I didn't just want Kiki to just have a broom, so I created a hybrid. My staff represented the cage that Kiki was transporting when she fell into the forest while being chased by crows. The branches wrapped around the cage, represent the forest, and my belt has the crow and star motif (from the art piece created by Ursula). On top of this, I put the motif of Gigi (smack dab in the middle) and the bakery onto the side of my choker (unfortunately you can't see it in any of my pictures, check Instagram where I will post one soon). I really wanted to echo  parts of the film in my cosplay.

The actual construction of this things happened quickly like three weeks. I will do a quick run down of my cosplay: underskirts consists of a huge double circle skirt with horsehair braid (10yds of hem), the over skirt has a 5yd hem (had to draft it twice before cutting), and each sleeve has at least (1yd hem). Phew! And my staff is a sanded and shaved PVC pipe, with the cage and branches made of worbla.

So, now I can finally talk about my day at Stan Lee's LA Comic Con (aka Comikaze). I actually really enjoyed this con (getting there was a nightmare, come on LA, don't hold three events within two blocks in one day!). The con was great because I got to catch up with so many cosplayers and fellow geeks that I know. I was able to shoot with one of my fav photographers, took a bunch of pictures, and had a great time with my friend. I hope everyone else who went to LA Comic Con had a great time as well! I'm so excited for my next cosplay and am overwhelmed by the love in the cosplay community! TTFN, ta ta for now.
